Thembekile’s Soup Kitchen runs on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons in Langa, serving 60 children with freshly cooked food.  Thembekile is a FAMSA HIV/Aids counsellor living in the Langa Flats, and in March last year, children came to her saying they were hungry,  as the Covid lockdown began.  

 

She appealed to us for help, and her kitchen started in May 2020, in a small covered corner of the flats, with financial support through SPT, of Rand 5000 per month.  This covered the cost of the food, cooking equipment, gas, sanitizer and airtime and a small stipend paid to two  unemployed mothers  neighbours in the flats nearby who assist her in preparing and cooking the food.  Thembekile manages the provision of food  and  equipment, and supervises the Covid safety protocol of themselves and the children as they queue up with their little bakkies,  ensuring they are wearing masks, sanitizing hands and keeping a safe social distance.   The soup kitchen has made a real difference in the community over the past 15 months according to Thembekile,  and she  reports that the children often do a dance of delight after eating,  - “Jerusalema” being one of their favourites.  

 

Now the soup kitchen is needing help with funding, our generous supporters having carried the project up until the end of October this year.  We are asking for any amount, but our aim is to try and bring in R5000 per month for the months of November, January and February. ( During the December school holidays, the kitchen does not operate.)
